• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Wonderful. : I've read this series from the first book and the quality has improved with every book. I have followed these characters from the beginning, watched them grow and evolve. Watched them hurt and suffer, watched them recovery and grow stronger. As always Connolly writes interesting characters, with wit and charm. The plot is always unique. While we see evil and the ills of the world his books are never maudlin. The writing is lyrical and flows beautiful. There is no skimming while reading a Charlie Parker novel. Enough detail and background information but not enough to get bogged down in. While I do remember the Balkan wars I learned a lot from this book. A Connolly novel satisfies on every level. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2021 )

• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Marta -- COMPELLING : I would read an updated phone book if I saw John Connolly's name on the cover and the words "Charlie Parker"! Each book is extraordinary and The Nameless Ones is fantastic. I am not going to say anything but if you are a vested Charlie Parker reasder, you not only adore his character but Louis, Angel and Charlie's daughters. Connolly writes so that you feel you know them, feel their pain, sorrow and joys. This book compels you to dig deep in your soul. I have reread each book at least twice, so I guess this will be coming around in a year or so, but it will be difficult to revisit. Mr. Connolly is a master storyteller. I read almost nonstop, but he is certainly by far my favorite. If you have not read any Parker books, start the journey, you won't regret it. Beware, you will need a good source of information to guide you through the complications of the sides and ethnic problems that fueled the fall of Yugoslavia and the subsequent war. Once again the author has abandoned Parker and his daughters and allowed Louis and Angel free rein as though they were the primary subject of the broader storyline, rather than colourful friends and supporters in Parker’s search for, and crusade against, the buried Angel. Looked forward to this coming out and started reading as soon as it arrived{2 days ago} would normally be finished by now but only halfway, very tedious with long boring descriptions of not much, so far no Charlie at all apart from one phone conversation and hardly any Angel and Louis. Will I finish it ? Probably, but at the moment its a few hours of my life I will not be getting back. I hope he goes back to writing how he used to, with a hint of the supernatural. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Dresdenfan -- Disappointed : I have bought and read all the Charlie Parker books before this and enjoyed every one, although unsurprisingly some more than others. However even the ones I liked least merited 4 stars and most deserved 5, so I am very disappointed that in my opinion "The Nameless Ones" should be awarded only 2. The writing is up to Mr Connolly's high standard and he introduces his views on the recent history of the Balkans in an interesting and informative way. The problem is with the plot, which unfortunately is simply not engaging. The protagonists are Louis and Angel rather than Parker himself, who appears only fleetingly. This is not a problem in itself, although it deprives us of Parker's point of view, but it is very difficult to believe in the motivation of the protagonists (revenge for the murder of an old associate of Louis). The plot deteriorates further with the unnecessarily complex methods used to assassinate the Serbian gangsters responsible, who are such small fry that the question is why would Louis bother to do this himself rather than contract it out? There are also some gaping holes in the plot and the protagonists' characters to ensure that one of the main characters can be murdered by the gangsters. I could go on but to summarise, I reread "The Dirty South" immediately after "The Nameless Ones" and it was almost like reading a different author. I sincerely hope Mr Connolly returns to form with his next book and that this one is just a tiny blemish on his stellar record. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2021 )

Even now though, when you hear ‘Serbian war criminals’ or ‘Bosnian hitmen’, you still shudder. Louis and Angel are out to make amends. A friend of there acquaintance was killed.
